English Presentation #1: Germanic Gods/Goddesses

Germanic Gods/Goddesses:

1. Odin:
Father of all Gods and Men
Able to travel to any of the 9 Nordic Worlds
God of Magic, Wisdom, and Learning
Is a psychopomp (able to decide who lives and dies in battle; controls fate)
Wednesday (Wodensdaeg) is named after him

2. Thor:
God of Thunder
Considered to be a son of Odin
The most popular Germanic God
He is the protector of Midgard
Human personification of strength
Most barbarian god; follows his own rules
Thursday (like Thor's Day) is named after him

3. Freya:
Mentioned a few times in Beowulf
Goddess of Love and Beauty
Known as the Queen of the Valkyries
Also a psychopomp (like Odin)
Wears the sacred necklace Brisingamen (demonstrates the value of jewelry in Germanic culture)
Friday is named after her

4. Freyr:
Freya's twin brother
God of fertility (strange because he is a guy)
King of the elves
God of Success
Ancestor of the Swedish and English

5. Tyr:
God of War
Very scrupulous and abides by the law, justice, and good morals

6. Loki:
Known as the Trickster
Is an iconoclast, which is interesting
Causes trouble for the gods, but also helps them out as well
Is a God but also possesses demonic characteristics (reminds me of Tyler the Creator's line: "I'm a walking paradox... no I'm not")

7. Heimdall:
Guardian of Bifrost, the rainbow bridge leading to Asgard, home of the gods
May symbolize the bridge between mankind and the sacred deities

8. Skadi:
Goddess of Winter and the Hunt/Known as the Snow Queen or Ice Princess
Goddess of Justice and Vengeance
